ED Management of Methamphetamine-Induced Psychosis and Cannabis Hyperemesis
This is case-based webinar on the management of agitation and psychosis related to methamphetamine use. As methamphetamine-related presentations continue to rise in emergency and outpatient settings, clinicians are increasingly faced with complex challenges in managing acute agitation, psychosis, and associated behavioral disturbances. This session will focus on real-world clinical cases to explore evidence-based strategies for safely and effectively assessing, de-escalating, and sedating patients under the influence of methamphetamine. Through interactive discussion, we aim to enhance clinical decision-making, improve patient outcomes, and support safer environments for both patients and healthcare teams. At the end, we also provide a brief summary of current best practices in treating cannabis hyperemesis syndrome.
Learning objectives:
- Recognize the clinical signs and symptoms of methamphetamine-induced agitation and psychosis
- Apply evidence-based strategies for the safe and effective pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic management of agitation in patients with suspected or confirmed methamphetamine use.
- Evaluate the risks and benefits of various sedation protocols, including the use of benzodiazepines, antipsychotics, and ketamine, with a focus on safety, efficacy, and appropriate escalation of care.
