Best Practices in Biological Specimen Handling

As a top priority, MHA Surgery and Procedure Committee provides opportunities to bring together multidisciplinary teams for education and training to improve quality and safety for all aspects of surgical procedures, including those performed at the bedside. Their work spans all settings of care including but limited to hospital OR, procedural areas such as IR, ASC, Cath and lab.

Join Deb Sonnenberg, MSN, RN, CNOR, professional practice nurse lead of M Health Fairview Surgical Services, Tyler Lindquist, MHA, FACHE, director of surgical services of United Hospital, and Maggie Hall, DNP, MAOL, RN, PHN, CST, director of perianesthesia of Abbott Northwestern Hospital, as they come together to share biological specimen best practices. During this one-hour webinar attendees will 

  • define the scope of specimen handling errors in the operating room,
  • review how process improvement methodologies can be applied to this problem,
  • discuss barriers and ongoing strategies to limit risk of specimen errors, and
  • examine the importance of sustaining high-reliability behaviors/standard work.

CMOs, physicians, surgeons, physician assistants, surgery and procedure committees, quality, safety, surgical time out contacts and any hospital or health system employee interested in reviewing biological specimen handling.

Continuing education

The program has been designed to meet the Minnesota Board of Nursing continuing education requirements for a total of one contact hour.
