Utilizing data and technical support to improve opioid stewardship

Opioid learning network series - session 4

About

With the Minnesota Department of Human Services’ (DHS) upcoming release of the 2020 opioid prescribing reports this month, there’s never been a better time to discuss the importance of leveraging data and health information technology to drive best practices in opioid prescribing. Utilizing data and tracking metrics of success, providers can promote transparency, improve systems, and create better patient outcomes. EMR’s can be customized to simplify the process and provide the necessary tools for care teams. Learn how to track metrics and use technology to identify opportunities for improvement with Scott G. Weiner, MD, MPH, FACEP, FAAEM, attending emergency physician and assistant clinical director in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and Kelly Black, MA, BS, program manager for opioid treatment at Essentia St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth, Minnesota.

Objectives

  • Discuss the importance of utilizing data and technical support to drive improvement in opioid prescribing.
  • Identify how to track, monitor, and report key quality metrics to identify opportunities for improvement and assess progress in opioid stewardship efforts.
  • Determine how the EMR can be leveraged to assist and support healthcare clinicians’ efforts to implement evidence- based practices in pain management and opioid prescribing.
