Communicating about health equity

TJC and CMS health equity regulations require hospitals to talk to their leadership, their board, their staff, and their community about health equity and health disparities. Raising awareness about inequities is often the first step in an action plan. It can be challenging to effectively communicate and message the value of health equity and ongoing hospital efforts to diverse stakeholders. During this session, Shawn Rossi will clarify definitions and requirements and discuss communication strategies that elevate health equity issues and mobilize change.
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
- Define key terms and concepts
- Highlight successful strategies to engage stakeholders and community health equity progress and results
- Prepare communicators to address pushback with data and stories
- Explain the role of trust in health equity and communications
Dr. Shawn Rossi serves as the vice president of communication and member engagement for the Mississippi Hospital Association, where she has served for over 20 years. She is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and holds a doctorate in health administration from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Dr. Rossi’s research focuses on community health improvement, investment, and collaboration.
